Chongshan Monastery, at the very beginning, was built in Tang Dynasty. At that time it was named White Horse Monastery and later it was renamed Yanshou Monastery and Zongshan Monastery. According to the recordation, the Chongshan Monastery was built on the site of the former monastery, said to date back to the 6th or 7th century. In A.D. 1382, in order to commemorate the empress of Zhuyuanzhang, the emperor of Ming dynasty, the 3rd prince of the emperor rebuilt a monastery on the base of the former. The reconstructed monastery was more brilliant than the old. Three lively statutes stand in the main hall: the central figure is Guanyin, the goddess of mercy with 1000 eyes and hands and eleven faces. Beautifully illustrated book covers show scenes from the life of the Buddha. Two series of mural paintings facsimiles show how Sakyamuni became Buddha and how a boy paid homage to a good many Buddha and learned the power of Buddha from them. Also some Buddhist scriptures of Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing dynasty are treasured up in the monastery. All those are on the display. The monastery lies on a side street running east of Wuyi Road. The opening time is 8 am to 5 pm daily.
